(DISCLAIMER: 2/3 of the SOGJ staff are die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fans and we usually try to remain as neutral as possible. The topic of re-signing Matt Holliday, however, may evoke some emotional writing at times. Moving on…)

The St. Louis Cardinals extended an offer to OF Matt Holliday on Friday.

According to ESPN.com, the St. Louis Cardinals have extended a contract offer to free agent OF Matt Holliday.  Rumors swirled throughout the MLB Winter Meetings that the Cardinals could not pony up the cash for Holliday and super douche agent Scott Boras’s asking price. Terms of the deal offered to Holliday on Friday are unknown.

Cardinals GM John Mozeliak expects to hear back from Holliday and Boras within 48 hours (For Cardinals fans: the longest two days of the year.)

Full story from ESPN.com:

The St. Louis Cardinals made an offer to free agent Matt Holliday before leaving for the winter meetings, the team’s general manager announced on ESPN radio in St. Louis on Friday.

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said he expects to hear back from Holliday’s agent, Scott Boras, within 48 hours. Terms of the deal are unknown.

Personally, I could totally see Boras taking a crap on any offer the Cards send his way and take Holliday to the Yankees.  That’s just his style. Plus, if he does allow Holliday to sign in St. Louis then he’ll have to deal with former manager Whitey Herzog on a regular basis.

(I’m all for calling up UFC President Dana White and getting an octagon set up on the pitcher’s mound in Busch Stadium III for that throw down. I’ll put 5k on Herzog all day, every day.)
