The Anti-Phil Jackson

Much is made of how well Phil Jackson coaches talent and well it should be because he has done it better than maybe any other coach in NBA history, but I feel a guy that does not get enough credit is George Karl.

Leading the Denver Nuggets this year currently to the second best record in the West while not having Carmelo Anthony for the better part of the past month has been no easy accomplishment, but Coach Karl has been able to manage. Using Chauncey Billups, Kenyon Martin, and a cast of role players the Nuggets have not slowed down.

That’s what George Karl has done every place he has coached. He is currently 12th on the all-time wins list and the 5th fastest coach to reach 700 wins in NBA history. He also has the 5th best winning percentage of the coaches in the top 12. He just wins games. Now the big knock on his career is that he has never won a championship but really few have in the last 20 years. Think about this Phil Jackson won 10, Rudy Tomjanovich won 2, Greg Popovich won 4 that only leaves 4 other titles to be won. Those others were won by Larry Brown(Hall of Famer), Doc Rivers(great team), Pat Riley(Hall of Famer), and Chuck Daly(Hall of Famer). George Karl coaches in maybe one of the most difficult eras in all of NBA history. Not to mention the only time one of his teams made it to the Finals they had to play arguably the greatest team in the history of the league with it’s best player on an all out mission to win. That is of course the 1995-1996 Chicago Bulls led by Michael Jordan.

This year Coach Karl has arguably the most talent he has ever had but it is an extremely deep Western Conference. I would love to see the Nuggets give the Lakers a run for their money because besides, a Kobe-Lebron final, a Lebron-Melo final would be great.

Hopefully Coach Karl will win his second bout with cancer. He recently was diagnosed with throat and neck cancer. He is only going to miss 2 games thus far due to his illness and hopefully he is able to beat cancer for the second time.

Again, you assume that Lebron will make it to the finals!
