J.J. Redick is not a super douche!

Arrogant? You bet. Cocky? Yep. A big baby, who complains every time he gets touched? He does play in the NBA doesn’t he. Good? Yes.

I have always been a University of North Carolina fan so to like anyone from Duke is pretty much against the rules. Now being from Illinois and not from the heart of North Carolina I think that I am allowed to fudge this rule a little. For instance I have always liked Grant Hill. How could you not? He was sponsored by Sprite and Fila, what’s not to like? But all other Duke players are pretty much off limits…until now.

Two things changed that for me recently. The first was listening to J.J. Redick talk about basketball on a Bill Simmons podcast. I was blown away Redick really knows his stuff. The other thing has been watching Redick in the playoffs. He has been nothing but consistent every time he comes off the bench. Everyone in the gym knows exactly why he is out there and yet he still gets open looks and drills them. He is also surprisingly good at getting fouled.

Why is this a surprise you ask? Very few really good college players have come out of Duke and been really good NBA players. JJ Redick is not at an elite level yet but he is doing much better than many thought. In college he was just another white shooter who went to Duke. He made faces, taunted fans, and was generally hated by most of America.(Unless you like Duke) But one thing you couldn’t take away from him was that he could flat out shoot. When he was drafted many questioned his ability and his chances to be an effective NBA player. But he has gotten stronger and used his high basketball IQ to become a productive NBA player.

There is one more thing that I have really enjoyed. At the end of Magic games Coach Stan VanGundy will switch offense for defense and this means that JJ has to sit down. But if you watch Redick exit the floor and head to the bench he is visibly pissed! I love it. He looks at VanGundy like he is crazy. It’s every time to0. Redick knows it’s coming and yet he still looks shocked and irritated when he comes out of the game.

I have a new found respect for Redick and I hope he continues to make shots possibly all the way into the NBA Finals.
