Gender Equality in Sports?

February 3, 2010 Leave a comment

Nearly 40 years ago Billie Jean King beat 55 year old former tennis champion Bobby Riggs to take an enormous step for women in sports. Since then few things have given women as much hope competing on the same level with men, that was until Kelly Kulick soundly beat Chris Barnes 265-195 in a professional bowling tournament last week. My only question is, are there any other sports where women can compete on the same level as men?

Michelle Wie and Annika Sorenstam have competed against men on the PGA tour, both unsuccessfully, Wie more so than Sorenstam. Sorenstam played in the skins game in 2003 against Fred Couples, Phil Mickelson, and Mark O’Meara and finished second. Could a women compete week to week against men on the PGA and have a chance of winning on a regular basis? I don’t know. It would be awful difficult to compete with some of the men off the tee. I think that if a women could be an average driver in length compared to the men, and really really straight off the tee, and she would have to be leathal with her putter she may have a chance.

In NACAR as soon as this coming season we will possibly see if a woman can compete week in and week out. Danica Patrick will first compete in the NASCAR minor leagues, The Nationwide Series, for 12 events. If she is successful she will no doubt make the jump to the Sprint Cup. Are her reflexes and instincts as a driver good enough to compete against men? She was hardly a humongous success in open wheel racing with only one win in 4 years of racing but maybe NASCAR is more suited for her.

Will women ever compete with men in sports like basketball or baseball or track in field? I don’t know. Could the UCONN women’s basketball team compete against a men’s division I basketball team? They have won 61 games in a row and are on pace to break their own record of 70 wins in a row. Physically they would have a very difficult but with effort and the right game plan and all the stars aligned, maybe?

The thing is we will never really know unless we play the game. I am fairly certain the worst NBA team still beats the best WNBA team but at the college or high school level I don’t think I am so certain. Leave a comment let us know what you think.

Danica Patrick signs with Dale Jr.’s team to race Nationwide in 2010

Everybody’s favorite Indy Car driver/model (no, not you Helio Castroneves) Danica Patrick has announced what was long rumored.  According to ESPN.com she will join JR Motorsports which is co-owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr. and powerhouse cup owner Rick Hendrick.  Patrick will race a part-time schedule in the Nationwide Series in 2010. It has been long rumored that Patrick had a desire to join a stock car circuit at some point and this is a perfect stepping stone to attempt to earn a full-time ride on the NASCAR Cup series in the future.

Here’s what June Bug had to say about Patrick a few weeks ago:

“She’s going to drive stock cars for somebody, someday,” Earnhardt recently said. “It’s just too much of a — look at all the Formula One guys over here checking [NASCAR] out — the writing is on the wall for her and several other guys. I think it’s exciting. She would be great for our sport. She wants to see what’s up.”

Should be interesting, but the learning curve here is huge. The jump in car physics alone from Indy cars to stock cars is massive, plus she will be competing against experienced NASCAR Cup veterans like Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch who race in the Nationwide series on a regular basis.
